The latest ploy made by the Rudd Government in order to distract from the broken promises made by him and his party on climate change, vows to fix the Nation's hospitals and Your Rights At Work rallies. These three factors in the 2007 election campaign were key to the Australian Labour Party’s (ALP) electoral victory, yet they have not been met.
To counteract this disappointment the ALP has been trying to introduce and pass a bill through legislation to increase the legal drinking age from 18 years of age to 19. Is this a joke? In these famous words once uttered by Pauline Henson “PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!!!” The current legal drinking age in Australia is set at 18, the age where an adolescent can legally be enter adulthood, and deal with the repercussions of their mistakes and no longer have mummy and daddy to run to and hide, where they are free to sign their life away (figuratively speaking that is). So why is the Rudd Government aiming to play Big Brother once again? Why it is that Kevin Rudd concentrating on this fact when there are many more important things to focus on, such as Unemployment and domestic violence.
It’s got the makings of the Alco-pop Tax syndrome all over again! 2008 saw the Rudd Government make the disastrous mistake of placing the Alco-pop tax on pre-mixed alcoholic beverages which they believed had a higher purchase rate amongst teens. It's increased tax on premixed drinks by 70 per cent but this in turn had the reverse affect on the issues that they were trying to tackle. This move placed more publicity and emphasise of the issue , fuelling the industry and giving it a 10 per cent increase in the sales of more potent liquor like spirits amongst teens. What I want to know is do Governments not learn from their mistakes?
